Early Summer Habitat Conditions in Canada

 Much of the prairies recently received ample rain, which has helped to maintain or improve habitat conditions, especially in Alberta. Habitat conditions are now generally very good in the east and fair-good in the west. Cool spring weather across the country has delayed waterfowl nesting, but early reports indicate that production should be good this year. Results from the CWS/USFW May Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey will be available in July. [...read more...]

This past weekend my wife and I attended a Hank Williams Jr. and Lynard Skynard concert. As expected, the concert was over the top. Since it was on a Friday night and Jackie keeps the office open later on Fridays, we had to rush to make the opening act, an hour and a half away. The drive to Memphis meant skipping supper and by the time the concert was over, I could have eaten the rear end off a water buffalo. WASHINGTON May 8, 2008, With a Farm Bill being readied for a final floor vote in the House and Senate, agricultural conservation initiatives are being treated differently than they were in earlier versions of this year's bill and in previous Farm Bills.

Inside the Spring Survey

The survey area that I'll be working in this spring is in southwest Manitoba and the southeastern corner of Saskatchewan. For the first portion of the survey we are staying in Brandon MB, approximately 200 km's from the SK border, from here we will travel west and north into Saskatchewan.
Every morning our crew of nine is up and on the road early enough to catch the birds when they are on open water performing their courtship displays and competing for hens. Typically we are able to cover between 2-4 survey segments every morning. [...read more...]
