"Fat and Happy"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
Late winter and early spring are a very important, but often overlooked, period in the life cycle of a duck. Even in the southern most portion of the flyways, most of us have put away our decoys, cleaned our guns and thinking about going fishing or getting out the turkey loads. These series of events usually put the duck population on the back burner, even though the next few months will have a dramatic impact on the season(s) to come. [...read more...]
Her First Duck Hunt
By Jason Thompson, Drake Waterfowl Web Manager
The morning began like most mornings when you are headed to the duck blind. The alarm clock sounded early, anticipation was high and the thought of another duck hunt being etched into my memory was something that excited me.
This day, however, was different. I would not be the one to fire the gun. In fact, as much as I would have liked to have been shooting this day, the season had ended for me two weeks earlier. On this cold weekend in early February it was the state of Alabama's Youth Hunt and I would be taking my oldest daughter, Emma Frances (10) out to give her a taste of what she had only seen second hand. Farm Bill Proposal Contains Mixed Results for Waterfowl Needs
By Ducks Unlimited
WASHINGTON May 8, 2008, With a Farm Bill being readied for a final floor vote in the House and Senate, agricultural conservation initiatives are being treated differently than they were in earlier versions of this year's bill and in previous Farm Bills.
"This bill has mixed results for ducks," said Dr. Alan Wentz, Senior Group Manager for Conservation and Communications. "We were pleased to see the revival of the Wetlands Reserve Program, but at the same time disappointed to see the Conservation Reserve Program acreage reduced." [...read more...]
Inside the Spring Survey
By Delta Waterfowl, Cam Meuckon The survey area that I'll be working in this spring is in southwest Manitoba and the southeastern corner of Saskatchewan. For the first portion of the survey we are staying in Brandon MB, approximately 200 km's from the SK border, from here we will travel west and north into Saskatchewan.
Every morning our crew of nine is up and on the road early enough to catch the birds when they are on open water performing their courtship displays and competing for hens. Typically we are able to cover between 2-4 survey segments every morning. [...read more...]
Find out what's going on during International Migratory Bird Day
By Ducks Unlimited
As Ducks Unlimited recognizes International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) on May 10, 2008 ducks and geese have left their wintering areas for the breeding grounds, some have arrived while others are still strenuously traveling North in search of prime breeding habitat. Waterfowl hunters are witnesses to large numbers of birds during hunting season, but many hunters may be unaware of where these birds go in Spring. DU biologists and staff have put countless hours into finding out where these birds go. What a better way to spend IMBD than to find out where birds are in several locations throughout the country on this celebration of migratory birds.
Where are your favorite birds going in Spring? [...read more...]
