Ron Pharr
Ron Pharr of Gaston Custom Calls grew up on a large farm in Alabama’s rural black belt area. The black belt is best known for its rich dark agricultural soil and abundant wildlife such as the elusive wild turkey, trophy whitetail deer and various species of waterfowl. Growing up in this area and literally being able to hunt some type of wild game year round made him gain such a respect for the outdoors that it provided the mold for him to become the avid outdoorsmen he is today.
While Alabama is not recognized for producing great water fowling numbers, there are still areas throughout the state where water fowling can be very successful. The bag limits growing up usually consisted mostly of wood ducks, mallards, gadwalls and the occasional resident Canada goose. It wasn’t until after his teenage years, that he was introduced to duck hunting in the Mississippi Delta by David Gaston. It was on this first hunt in the Delta, that Ron found a second home and each year he spends the majority of his time living in Monroe County, Arkansas guiding during hunting season. During the late 90’s and early 2000’s, David founded Gaston Custom Calls which was born from the teachings of the late, Alvin Taylor of Clarendon, Arkansas. David asked Ron to be a part of carrying on the tradition of call making with him and without hesitation he was honored to be a part of this legacy. Since those early humble beginnings, Gaston Custom Calls has become a household name in the field and as well as on the stage for the World’s Championships. "To us, call making has simply been more than just a business, it was an opportunity to become more entwined in a water fowling family who all believe in the greater good of the sport. The friendships shared can never be forgotten."
Ron and his family reside in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama where he also owns a steel construction company specializing in the commercial and industrial sectors. He and his wife, Angela have three children, a son Gaston, a daughter Channing Elizabeth and another son Gannon, who are all ready learning to appreciate the great outdoors from their dad. "I started learning from nature when I was very young and I want my kids to have those same opportunities. No matter how old you are, you can never stop learning from what nature has to teach you."
Ron travels to many different regions and hunts various species of wildlife each year but he still says none can compare to his fondness for the Mississippi Delta. Ron’s most memorable outdoor moment to date was when his son, Gaston spent last years opening day of duck season in the blind with his dad and granddad, David Gaston. "That experience is something that I will never forget, and we owe it all to the grace of God for providing us with such a wonderful place for making memories."
