Hello, my name is Richard Davis and I live in Owasso, Oklahoma. I was introduced to duck hunting by my father when I was around 12 years old. I still remember the first words of wisdom my father gave me about duck hunting "Son, nothing will get you uninvited quicker than, bad calling, terrible dog work, and eating all your buddies' food." I've been able to live my life by and perfect the first two pieces of advice but that third one has been very elusive for me on many a hunting trip. Often finding many a hunting buddy wondering who ate all the sausage rolls!
We have to be very versatile here in Oklahoma on our hunting. The lake that one season provided excellent flooded timber hunting last season can be a giant mud flat the next. To be successful you have to be able to adapt and adjust. I think that is what I like about the sport so much is the "Getting Ready" and "Anticipation". Every season takes on a life of its own and will test and teach you something every time you are in the field.
About twelve years ago I got involved with competitive retriever competitions, competing in both Hunt Tests and Field Trials. I found this was an excellent way to take my duck season from 3 months to year round. I've been very fortunate to own and train three Master Hunter level retrievers. I couldn't think of going duck hunting without one of my dogs. If you are not duck hunting with a finished retriever you are only getting about 1/3 out of our great sport.
About two years ago I started Gunners Up Remote Launchers, Gunners Up manufactures wingers and bird launchers so retriever trainers who train alone can have a way to practice on marks. Gunners Up is the Official Launcher of the HRC Spring and Fall Grand.
Good Luck, Good Training and Great Hunting!
