I was born in Kalamazoo,Michigan, and moved to Northern Indiana at the age
of 10. I started hunting small game at the age of 13,but waterfowl hunting
was what interested me the most. My first duck hunt over a local
pothole, produced a mixed limit of greenheads and teal. I have been a duck and
goose hunting fanatic ever since. I basically just winged it,and learned as I
went on the fly, freelancing all over Northern Indiana and Southern
Michigan. I developed my early goose hunting skills, hunting the waterfowl
management areas of Lower Michigan. This was long before the resident goose
flocks of today, were established in many areas.
I acquired my first female lab back in early 1975,and basically had my own
bloodline of dogs for close to 25yrs. I was always willing to put the time
and effort into training my dogs year round, and it always paid off in the
long run with dogs that produced in the field. I just figured that I was
doing a great disservice to the dog,If I didn't do my part to get the dog
ready to hunt. Dogs have always been a big part of my life as a
waterfowler, and I have always enjoyed training and getting them ready,as
much as the hunt itself. Over the past 30yrs. ,I have learned some of things
that help to be successful in the field. Attention to detail, and being
willing to adapt and change to weather and other hunting conditions, were
some of the major keys to success for me. Due to the advancement of products
available to the duck and goose hunters of today, hunting is still a learning
experience on every hunt for me.
One of the most important things in waterfowling today,is keeping the youth
involved. They are the guardians for the youth of tomorrow and this wonderful
way of life that we all love to do. As much as anything,I really enjoy
watching a young ones face after their first hunt, and rarely is it their
last one. My son Bowen has been hunting with me since age 5, he is now
23. Rarely did he ever miss a hunt, many times coming home every weekend from
college during the season. My passion and obsession for waterfowl, has also
become his. His older sister Jana also went along on many hunts, and my two
youngest girls have had fun on some early dove hunts. . I have been fortunate
to have duck and goose hunted 3 of the 4 flyways, and been to prairies of
Canada many times. Even today,I enjoy the hunts with my son Bowen, and brother
Paul more than any.
