David says, "Don’t wish your life away wishing for another season. Live each day for itself , loving God, your family, and friends." |
David Gaston of Gaston Custom Calls grew up in Wilcox County, Alabama near the Alabama River and Lake William Dannelly Reservoir. David remembers as a little boy hearing the adults talking about hunting wild turkey, deer, ducks, and quail and thinking to himself that this is what he should be spending his time doing. In 1963, he bought his first shotgun, a 20 gauge with the money he had received for making good grades in school and working odd jobs on the weekends. It took six long months to save up for that first shotgun but it wasn’t long before he started reaping the rewards for his wait. He can remember his daddy telling him to "come on" and listen to the sounds of the ducks as they migrated south over his small town of Camden, Alabama. In the fall of 1966, David shot his first duck, a wood duck, as it flew over the corner of small dove field. This particular duck ignited a passion within him for water fowling that still burns fiercely today.
David has guided hunters in the pursuit of wild turkey and ducks for more than 35 years in various regions. David had always been intrigued by making calls for different species of game whether it is a "snuff can" or "wing bone" call for turkey, to turning Arkansas style duck calls out of local woods. It was during a period of 18 years while guiding in Arkansas, that David became a close friend of the late Alvin "Fruitjuice" Taylor of Taylor Made Duck Calls in Clarendon, Arkansas. Mr. Taylor apprenticed David in the art of call making over those years and in 2001 he turned his love of hunting into a business when he started making his own line of duck calls. David said, "every call he makes is a tribute to Mr. Taylor and he is thankful for the friendship and trust that Mr. Taylor instilled in him." The highlight of their friendship knew that Mr. Taylor shared a love for Jesus Christ before his passing as he called David to tell him about it. In David’s short time in the call making industry, his calls have risen to national recognition winning numerous state and regional contests sanctioned by the World Duck Calling Contest. He also has introduced a fine line of successful goose calls, with his Snow Goose Call taking home the World Championship in 2004. David is active in the contest calling scene as has he judged numerous NTWF and Duck Calling contests. He currently is the chairman for the state of Alabama Duck Calling Contest held each year.
Today, David and his wife Dottie live in Thomasville, Alabama. He spends most of his time shipping orders for his line of calls, talking hunting and sharing his love for his grandchildren. He has given up guiding but still spends quite of bit of time hunting in Arkansas each season with friends and his grandson, Gaston. You can bet that you will run into him during Thanksgiving Weekend in Stuttgart at the World Duck Calling Championships supporting the "Gaston Gang".
