Bill Mays
"Drake is designed for hunters by hunters and every feature is systematically placed for easy access and usability. I make my living in the field as an outdoor writer and they make apparel for all seasons. I'm warm, dry, and in total comfort in my duck blind or sitting with my back against a big oak tree in the spring time calling in a big long bearded gobbler. Drake and Ol'Tom hunting apparel is the best in the business today." -Bill Mays |
Bill Mays grew up in Southern California and yes he was a surfer as a teenager. But he also grew up with a fishing rod in his hand and at a young age he would ride his bicycle 12 miles one way every day in the summertime to the only pond in the San Fernando Valley, a place called Reseda Park.
Joining the U.S. Air Force at 18 years of age and being stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Northern California was the beginning of his hunting and fishing quest. With 5 lakes to fish and duck and pheasant hunting on the Air Base, Mays thought he died and went to heaven. He married a local girl and her dad was a hunter and fisherman. After learning the basic skills in the outdoors from his father-in-law, Mays spun off and wanted to be the best in the field and was constantly looking for more experienced hunters and fisherman to take him into the field.
After the military and at 22 years of age Mays found a man named Bill Brown that would be his mentor, long time friend, and take him to the professional level in the outdoors. The late Bill Brown of Roseville California took Mays and his 3 sons hunting or fishing every weekend. Brown taught them to be successful in the outdoors by reading and adjusting to conditions for both fishing and hunting.
After decades of hunting and fishing, Mays is freelance writer, award-winning photographer, videographer, and has been published in, Western Outdoor News, WON BASS, FLW Outdoors, Quail Unlimited, and Sporting Days Magazine, California Game and Fish, and Western Outdoors Magazine, and California Waterfowl. When not writing articles Mays is a duck hunting seminar speaker and photographer for the International Sportsmen's Expo. He also is a member of (OWAC) Outdoor Writers Association of California.
This will be the 40th year Mays has been hunting waterfowl in the Sacramento Valley and has been hunting waterfowl in the Klamath Basin for 20 years. He also owns and operates Southwind Kennel and raises yellow Labrador Retrievers. His passion for waterfowl hunting continues to grow and as an Outdoor Writer and Award Winning Photographer he has the opportunities to hunt with some of the best waterfowl hunters and bass fisherman in today's outdoor world.
Mays is a pro staffer for: Drake Waterfowl Systems, Pro Drive boats & motors, Haydel's Game Calls, Gibson Duck Blinds, Kent Cartridge, G&H Decoys, and Tangle Free.
