Thus the name "Double-Duty Decoys". By having the option to remove the keel, you can decrease the weight of the decoy by 42%, which correlates to 42% less resistance to the wind on the water's surface.Even better, eliminating the keel that typically drags through the water increases decoy motion exponentially. It also eliminates the decoy from getting hung up in stubble lurking beneath the water's surface and running aground.
Levees and dry ground are other great places to use keel-free decoys. When self-righting decoys are an absolute must, simply snap on the Opti-Keel™.

Although our decoys look amazing and the adjustable heads are a great asset, the most unique innovation can't be seen until the decoy is flipped over. A concave bottom creates a vacuum seal with the decoy and the water's surface. The slightest breeze or water movement brings a spread to life! With the absence of the keel, there is nothing anchoring the decoy to the water, allowing it to "swim" freely. The removable Opti-Keel™ is the innovative feature that creates the "Double Duty" in the decoy. The comfortable hand grip allows the keel to be quickly and easily removed or installed. Removing the keel not only increases the motion in the decoy, it also lightens it by 42%, making transportation to and from the duck hole much less painful. With multiple locking points, extra attention was given to securing the Opti-Keel to the decoy. Also, optional attachment points for decoy rigging were created for achieving various floating options. The Opti-Keel comes in handy when self-righting is an absolute must.

Double Duty™ Decoys - Mallard Dozen (8 Drake / 4 Hen)
Of course these decoys look incredibly lifelike and offer the versatility of adjustable head positions, but the most unique innovation can only be seen when the decoy is flipped over. MOTION The concave bottom of our Breeze-Ryder™ Base allows a vacuum to form between the decoy and the surface of the water. Even when the removable keel is not present, our VacuSeal Technology™ stabilizes the decoy on the water. These features create the "double duty" in our decoys - you can hunt either with or without the keel and have total confidence in their performance. The removable keel provides easy use and storage, less bulk on an ATV or in a boat, reduced weight, and greater versatility in shallow water or dry ground. You can use the Double Duty Decoys in less than 2" of water or even place them on dry ground surrounding the water.When do you NOT need to use the keel? Almost ALWAYS. Only in extremely high winds and waves do we suggest using the removable Opti-Keel™. Without the keel, the Breeze-Ryder Base allows even the slightest wind or current to bring your decoy spread to life. In a side-by-side comparison to fixed-keel decoys, the Drake Double Duty™ Decoys literally ran circles around the competition.
Another huge advantage of using our decoys without the keel is the reduced weight. The average pack of a dozen standard decoys with weighted keels weighs 18.7 pounds. One dozen or our decoys used without the keels weigh just 10.7 pounds! That's a huge difference. Imagine having 24 fewer pounds to carry with a set-up of 3 dozen decoys.
One dozen decoys includes 8 drakes and 4 hens in the following body styles. Swimmer and Rester styles have adjustable head positions, allowing 11 different looks with 12 decoys.

- True-to-life body posturing - a live duck's body changes posture while performing various actions. We went to great lengths to emulate live ducks with each body style. For example, a resting duck with its head lowered has a greater arch in its back than an upright swimming duck, and their feathers will lay in a different configuration. These are just a few of the details we considered when developing the Double Duty Decoys.
