The Dog Days of Summer
By Ron Pharr, Drake Field Expert
Too hot to fish, too hot for golf, and those new fall hunting catalogs are arriving in the mail daily making the passion for waterfowling burn that much hotter. It is this dreadful time of the year that is filled with inactivity for thousands of waterfowlers. Yes, I am talking about the dog days of summer and it is during this stagnation that we search for some activities that you can do indoors to beat the heat. Here are few things I do during this time of year that has me ready come opening day of hunting season.
The cleaning and tuning of waterfowl calls is one thing I find relaxing and an easy way to stay cool indoors. It also allows you to inspect the calls, order any parts, or simply ship them back to the call maker for proper maintenance. If you should have to mail them off to the call maker, then this would allow you to receive them ready for hunting well prior to the start of the early season.
The cleaning and inspection of your firearms is always a must in my book. I pay a visit to my local gunsmith for routine service of my firearms every year. One rule of etiquette when visiting your local gunsmith is that the safety is on, the chamber open, and the firearm is free of any ammunition before entering the place of business. With this professional maintenance, you can be insured that everything will be functioning properly when it comes time to pull the trigger on that first fall hunting trip.
The rigging of new decoys is something I have always enjoyed doing while sitting in my lazyboy in front of the TV. I usually spread the dekes out on the floor, cut my rigging to length, attach my weights, tie them up and bag them all in one sitting. A simple rule I use when rigging new decoys is that the depth of my decoys are never deeper than the height of my waist in waders. The reason being is that I can gauge of the depth of the water and will be self assured that if I can't get to the decoy after the morning's hunt then it has probably drifted into deep water.
This last one is my personal favorite thing to do! With the new 2006 Drake Catalog leading the way, and others filled with an abundance of waterfowl goodies. It is time to start putting that equipment list together for the needs of the upcoming season. The sooner the order is placed the better chance you have of receiving your items from initial stock inventory from your supplier. There is nothing worse than waiting until the last minute to order that much needed item and not being able to receive it in time for that special hunting trip.
Again these are just a few things I do to help occupy my mind during this stretch of summer and I hope they will serve you heading into fall.
