Seasons End... or Beginning?
By Jerry Kryspin, Jr., Drake Field Expert

As the sun sets on that last cold day afield in January, with the winds calming down and the whistling wings settling in for another night's sleep, the thoughts began running through my mind. It was the thoughts of success during the season that had just passed. It was the thoughts high-fives, handshakes, and ear-to-ear grins that bring us back to the field day after day, year after year. The culmination of the season was upon us - and regardless of the harvest tally, good or bad, it was a season well spent with good friends and family… as it always is!

The gear has been spread across the back lawn. Muddy garments have been washed and now hanging over the line drying in crisp winter air. Portable blinds are now returned to their storage area with natural vegetation being removed. Guns are being broken for complete cleaning. Decoys are being cleaned from being afield for the duration of the season. Some of these soldiers have battle wounds from incidental contact and those tough decoys need some repair work. Others are being repainted to try to bring back life into blocks that have seen quite a few generations of both hunters and fowl. Is this the season's end, or is it the beginning of the next season already?

Most folks would attribute the preceding events to the culmination of another waterfowl season, as it does seem that way from the onset. However to some folks, its meaning is much deeper. It is part of an ongoing cycle; a cycle for certain types of waterfowl hunters that eat, sleep, and breathe waterfowling. Every time they step outside to get a breath of fresh air, their eyes tend to go scan the skies. Thinking about migrating waterfowl both northward heading to the breeding grounds and southerly on their way to the wintering grounds. It's all about the experiences shared upon the journeys. It is a never ending saga. Calling it an obsession would not do it justice. Passion would be an understatement. Few words can express how certain people become engulfed in this wonderful pastime. It's a way of life, for either the Season's End or the Season's Beginning.

Take care and shoot straight.
