"DRAKE GOES TO SUMMER CAMP!"
There is only one thing we at Drake Waterfowl like better than being outdoors, and that's seeing kids get involved in the outdoors. That is why we started Drake Young Guns Hunt Club and that is why we decided to drive over 600 miles to Pinewood, South Carolina, to check out Camp Woodie International Youth Waterfowl Education Center. Along for the ride was Drake co-founder Tate Wood with 9 year old son Will, Drake Creative Director Mike Womack and 8 year old son Noah, and Drake Marketing/PR Director Clay White.
With the launch of Young Guns Hunt Club, Drake's goal is to build a community of young hunters through education and entertainment utilizing the web, workshops and hunting events. With the website firmly in place, we wanted to experience one of the country's leading youth events. In fact, Camp Woodie is the largest hunting summer camp for kids in the United States. Camp Woodie is a five-day camp offered throughout the summer by the South Carolina Wildfowl Association. Its main purpose is to introduce kids to hunting, fishing, and outdoor skills through education and firearm safety, but the main goal is to create a positive outdoor experience that will last a lifetime. Each day is packed with shooting skeet, archery, rifle range, swimming, and canoeing, as well as activities such as mudwrestling, capture-the-flag, campfire skits, and just good ol' horsing around the bunkhouses, equipped with pool and foosball tables.
The world-class facility, gear, shooting ranges, and equipment are only a small reason for Camp Woodie's success. The young, energetic staff is why we believe the kids keep coming back year after year. They did a great job of walking that fine line between "buddy" and "mentor" to keep the kids safe and happy. Instructors specialized in shooting skills, archery skills, and fishing instructions. The counselors are perfect role models for young, budding outdoorsmen. Special guests also came to camp to conduct Hunter Safety Certification and provide a duck calling seminar.
Needless to say, Will and Noah had a great time and have already asked to return next year. As for Tate, Mike, and Clay...they give Camp Woodie a big "thumbs up" as well. The log cabin dining hall and bunk houses created a great atmosphere for the kids, and the surrounding waterfowl habitat gave the campers a first-hand look at how much fun they will have as young sportsmen and women.
